Kenfig Hill Match Report

The morning efforts of the home coaches and committee to get this Division 1 West Central match on at the Recreation ground were not in vain, match official Mr Elfyn Roberts happy to give the go ahead. The home side were caught cold in the opening minutes, a well placed cross kick from visitors outside half Nicky Giles into space out wide saw centre Connor O'Connell racing over, Giles adding the extras. Pencoed hit back within minutes, a driving maul deep in the visitors 22 resulted in scrum half Kyle Barrett crossing half way out. Pencoed then conceded a penalty at the restart and Giles put his side ahead 5-10. Territorially the home side were doing well into a strong wind and Rhys Clark did well to win back a clearance kick from Barrett with a good take on the run to take play into the  Kenfig Hill half, however the home side were having difficulty developing any continuity conceding a series of penalties on the floor. Pencoed centre Rhys Thomas broke down the left and only good cover defence from the " Mules " forced left wing Gareth Dyer out of play. Clarke again did well in deep defence to counter and set up a position from where home No10 Adam Williams kicked a good penalty goal into the breeze and the visitors led 8-10 at the interval.

Pencoed broke early in the half following a short kick from Barrett with Williams breaking into the visitors 22 and following sustained pressure the outside half put Pencoed into the lead for the first time with a twenty metre penalty goal. The visitors then picked up a yellow card, however only a superb cover tackle from home full back Tom Cross on right wing Anthony Grabham prevented a score. Clarke was again in the picture breaking down the right to find Williams who passed inside for supporting back row forward Aaron Halse to score close to the posts, Williams converting and Pencoed led by 18 points to 10. Cross then saved another try with a tackle on left wing Stenner at the corner flag. The " Mules " began to enjoy a period of pressure and with the home side picking up a yellow card things began to look a little ominous for the home support. To their credit however Pencoed defended resolutely, Cross making his third try saving tackle of the match before Barrett relieved pressure with a superb clearance from his own 22 to within metres of the opposition 22. Thomas then put Cross away with a well disguised pass, the home full back unfortunately unable to regather his kick ahead in the ingoal area. The visitors then returned to the attack with Giles dropping a goal in the final minutes to earn a well deserved losing bonus point for his side and the home support were to endure some anxious final moments before victory came with the final whistle. This was a hard earned win for the home side with young Rhys Clarke taking the Pencoed Man of the Match accolade.

On Saturday Pencoed host Cwmllynfell in the third round of the Swalec Plate at the Recreation Ground, kick off time to be confirmed ?
